5 tips to organize your SXSWi schedule

This will be my third time at SXSWi so I have a few tips that might be useful for the first-timers. I will disclose, though, that I don’t attend the conferences, for me and my team it’s all about the networking and connections.

Plan ahead

It’s key to find events and parties beforehand. Once you get to Austin’s airport your brain has to be in hustler mode. If you have a connecting flight, check out the bar closest to the gate for your Austin flight, you can start meeting people there.

Stay focused

The search for events must be related to your interests and the reasons you go to SXSWi. If you want to meet Accelerator Executives, sign up for that kind of party. If you are in the email world (like me with SendGrid/RebelMail), go to events hosted by email companies or at their offices. They always have employees around and that’s your target.

How to find events

The most effective way is reaching out to SXSWi veterans. They already have some contacts and are in the loop for things that might not show up at the official calendars. Also, don’t miss the ATX Startup Crawl, it’ makes it easier to meet people before the conference, you go to multiple offices and get to mingle with different crowds. This year is Thursday, March 10 from 5 to 10 p.m. you can see more information on their Facebook page. Oh, and be there early.

Search Eventbrite

Another way to find things to do is by going to Eventbrite and searching for SXSW on the dates you’ll be in Austin. Have the app readily accessible, since most events rely on it to get in, and it gives you a schedule and overview of the events you’ve been invited or signed up to.

Keep the team informed

When you find events, make sure to share with your whole entourage, sometimes it’s better to spread and you don’t want everyone to go to the same place. The easiest way to stay in the loop is open a group chat.

Bonus Pro Tip:

ABC. Always be charging. Pack an extra battery.

I hope you have a productive and fun time at SXSWi, see you there!
