4 phrases that will make your team more effective

A company is as good as its team. A strong team is built with integrity, trust and good energy. All these qualities need to be developed from the inside and must be represented by managers and founders.

However, not all teams behave the same way. Google conducted a research about what made their best teams effective and they found two valuable aspects:

  • “First,… members spoke in roughly the same proportion,… referred to as “equality in distribution of conversational turn-taking”..”
  • And the good teams also had what they called “average social sensitivity”, which means that they had good intuition about each other’s feelings.

Creating a team with the skills needed to trust each other requires digging deep into each individual’s personality and strengths. Using the right language will help a startup leader on achieving that.

There are a couple of phrases that will show others that you are honest and care about having a healthy working relationship.

“What do you think we should do is…”

Show that you have others best interests in mind, from your team, to your clients. Make their opinion count. Another alternative to this phrase is an open-ended question like What do you think it should be our next step?”

“Let’s try that” or “I trust your decision”

Being positive about your team’s opinion or suggestion gives them confidence and keeps them motivated. Motivation is an important enhancer of productivity, so you’ll have a team that will strive to produce the best end product. Also, with you showing you trust in their skills, they won’t be intimidated when asking you for advice.

“We have a common challenge”

This phrase applies to every member of a project, from your team, to suppliers and clients. It will be easier to find solutions to a problem with a defined common goal. Everyone will brainstorm with different solutions. Your team will possibly see different paths, but, because they trust each other, finding a solution will be a smoother process.

Do you need any help?” or “Can I be of any help?”

Showing willingness to cooperate as a colleague is essential to be trustworthy. You create an environment of truthful communication instead of fear. Plus, it will be a better strategy for your team to learn from each other.

Now you know how essential language is when a good startup’s team is being assembled. Trust will help each member of your group to follow its instincts and read each other. At the end of the day, it’ll be easier to find that common ground that will make you reach your goals and achieve success.
